Thus the Sudivision names such as, “Country Club View”, “Fairway” and “Argyle Forest” The Oldest Houses in South Four Corners date back to the late 1920’s and early 1930’s.
There are 5 houses in South Four Corners that make up a Montgomery County ”Historic District”. They are the “Polychrome Houses” built by John Joseph Early in 1934 and 1935. The houses are outstanding examples of the Art Deco Style with richly ornamented appearance and relatively rare examples of pre-cast concrete panel constuction in single family homes for the time period. 3 polychrome houses are on Sutherland Road and 2 of the polychrome houses face Colesville Road near the exit ramp to the Beltway. A Silver Spring Blogger recently wrote this article about the Polychrome Houses. A Recent Article in the Washington Post is about these houses - from Montgomery County The Historic Polychrome House District Article and from 2005 another Washington Post article . Many people seem to be fascinated with these houses.
Popular House Styles are the Cozy Cape Cods and Traditional Colonials built before, during and just after WWII. During the post war building boom years - the 1950’s and 60’s brought newer mid century modern ramblers and split levels to complete the neighborhood. There are approximately 1,100 Single Family Homes within the Neighborhood boundaries of South Four Corners.

Silver Spring Residents Fighting to Save the Watson House
January 6th, 2008 Categories: Houses in Silver Spring, Real Estate, Woodside
The Committee to Save the Watson House, a large group of residents in Silver Spring’s Woodside Forest, has
appealed to Montgomery County to save the historic Watson House, one of the best and few remaining examples of the Dutch Colonial architecture in the area. Early in 2007, the Committee hired EHT Traceries, Inc., architectural historians based in D.C., to research the house and its architectural significance. Originating in homes put up by German settlers in Pennsylvania as far back as the 1600s, the Dutch Colonial style saw a revival in the early 20th century. Built ca. 1918, the house at 9206 Watson Road sits atop a hill on just slightly under 1.5 acres. In its wooded setting bordered by an intricately woven stone wall, it bespeaks a time before the late 20th century boom in suburban development.
The house almost abuts two others that have already received historic designation by the county: the Civil War-era Condict House and the late 1880s, Second Empire Wilbur House. From this historic enclave whose three distinctive styles tell a story of American architectural history spanning three-quarters of a century, it is a stone’s throw to Sligo Creek to the north and only a short walking distance to downtown Silver Spring to the south. The county’s Historic Preservation Commission took up the case of the Watson House along with other proposed historic resources at its scheduled Dec. 19 meeting. Although HPC staff did not recommend the nomination for designation, the commission, allowing for additional materials to be submitted, put off a vote until its January 9 meeting. At that time, commissioners will decide whether to recommend to the County Council that the house be placed on the county’s Master Plan for Historic Preservation. If it is not designated, Committee members fear the house will be demolished.
“We do not want to see this beautiful old house razed and the surrounding landscaping destroyed to make way for a new development,” said Kathleen Staudt, a Committee member. “At the same time, we’re not opposed to reasonable new development on the property as long as the existing home is preserved.” Apart from the house’s architectural value, there is increasing evidence that the elevated area on which the triad of houses sits was used as a Confederate encampment, as is suggested in memoirs of soldiers who marched with Confederate General Jubal A. Early when he advanced toward Washington in July 1864. In addition, the Watson House property contains a wide spectrum of mature plant specimens and groves, including Azalea, American Holly, Hemlock, Kentucky Coffee Tree, White Pine, Poplar, Dogwood, Southern Magnolia and Crape Myrtle.
Many Thanks to a Commitee Member of Save the Watson House for Information and Photos!

When Fido, Fluffy or Tweety Go Missing in Silver Spring
December 18th, 2007 Categories: Houses in Silver Spring, Silver Spring Neighborhoods, Woodside
Robin Siegel is resident of the Woodside Park Neighborhood of Silver Spring and a tireless lost and found volunteer for the Montgomery County Humane Society. You may have seen her vehicle in and around Silver Spring. She has the vehicle “wrapped with what she does”, so you can’t miss it!
Robin is a Volunteer who has a mission, a passion for and a great deal of success finding owners of lost pets by using neighborhood Yahoo groups. She has joined over 100 groups in the past two years so that she can monitor for lost pets, post information, and notify of animals picked up in the area.
If you get a request from her to join your Yahoo group, please permit her to do so, so that she can add your Silver Spring neighborhood to the range that she is able to cover. I hope you have no objections to her posting notices to groups when pets are found in your area. She can also answer questions regarding the shelter, and advise on lost and found pets in general.
If you find a any lost pet in your Silver Spring Neighborhood (including cats, dogs, birds, ferrets, hamsters, lizards, rabbits . . . just about anything!) and you don’t know who it belongs to feel free to contact her for suggestions on finding the owners.

The McMansions in East Silver Spring
December 11th, 2007 Categories: Bungalow, Cape Cod, Downtown Silver Spring, East Silver Spring, Houses in Silver Spring, McNeills Addition, New Construction, Real Estate Market, Silver Spring Neighborhoods, Woodmoor, old houses

This post was inspired by a another local blogger www.ThayerAvenue.com who posted about a ginormous McMansion going up in East Silver Spring on Thayer Avenue.
Most of East Silver Spring still has “normal sized” older houses. The few McMansions or new infill construction
that we do have REALLY stand out.
One example on Easley street is the “McMansion with no windows” It started out as a small bungalow home built in 1928 between 2 other similar houses. The home had a larger and deeper than average lot size of 12,180 sq ft.
It was torn down sometime ago and remained a big watery mud hole with trash and debris in it for a few years. I once walked by the lot and noticed they were still getting junk and other mail delivered to 701 Easley, it was strewn all over the front of the mud hole. While it was still just a hole, it caused a lot of concern and complaints from the adjoining neighbors and the neighborhood in general.
I though they’d never build anything there. Then all of a sudden a huge foundation went up this past year. The picture does not do it justice - it is ENORMOUS. Can’t wait to see what it will look like when it’s finished. It will certainly stand out amongst the small old bungalows on that street.

A tasteful newly constructed infill home was completed recently just down the way at 608 Deerfield in East Silver Spring - McNeills Subdivision. The lot was a little over 7,000 square feet and an old garage at the back of the vacant lot was the only thing torn down to build the house.
This house sold for $1,191,064.00 ( one million, one hundred ninety one thousand and sixty four dollars ) and settled less than 3 months ago. I think this NEW house just “nails it” for a perfect fit with the neighborhood character of East Silver Spring.
Check out the Listing and Interior Photos Link for 608 Deerfield Avenue, Silver Spring, Md 20910.
Some Gigantic Monster Houses have gone up or are going up in some older Silver Spring neighborhoods, for instance this one on Randolph Road. There is a Monster Palace on New Hamphire Avenue in Hillandale and a Giant House going up in Woodmoor just past the Woodmoor Shopping Center going North on Colesville that you just can’t miss when driving out that way. Sligo from Silver Spring Singular has posted a few blogs about McMansions in Silver Spring. I liked this post about Mc Mansions by a local blogger. Dan Reed (Our future architect/Urban Planner) from Just Up the Pike writes about them all the time and Silver Spring Daily Photo has a lot of photos of McMansions in and around Silver Spring.
So, How do you feel about McMansions in Silver Spring? What’s your opinion? Want more? Want less? Want Larger? Smaller? or just don’t care?
