The McMansions in East Silver Spring

Old easley
This post was inspired by a another local blogger www.ThayerAvenue.com  who posted about a ginormous McMansion going up in East Silver Spring on Thayer Avenue.

Most of East Silver Spring still has “normal sized” older houses.  The few McMansions or new infill construction Easley Middlethat we do have REALLY stand out.

One example on Easley street is the “McMansion with no windows”  It started out as a small bungalow home built in 1928 between 2 other similar houses.  The home had a larger and deeper than average lot size of 12,180 sq ft.

It was torn down sometime ago and remained a big watery mud hole with trash and debris in it for a few years.  I once walked by the lot and noticed they were still getting junk and other mail delivered to 701 Easley, it was strewn all over the front of the mud hole. While it was still just a hole, it caused a lot of concern and complaints from the adjoining neighbors and the neighborhood in general.
I though they’d never build anything there.  Then all of a sudden a huge foundation went up this past year.  The picture does not do it justice - it is ENORMOUS.  Can’t wait to see what it will look like when it’s finished.  It will certainly stand out amongst the small old bungalows on that street.
Deerfield - million
A tasteful newly constructed infill home was completed recently just down the way at 608 Deerfield in East Silver Spring - McNeills Subdivision. The lot was a little over 7,000 square feet and an old garage at the back of the vacant lot was the only thing torn down to build the house.

This house sold for $1,191,064.00 ( one million, one hundred ninety one thousand and sixty four dollars ) and settled less than 3 months ago.  I think this NEW house just “nails it” for a perfect fit with the neighborhood character of East Silver Spring.
Check out the Listing and Interior Photos Link for 608 Deerfield Avenue, Silver Spring, Md 20910.

Some Gigantic Monster Houses have gone up or are going up in some older Silver Spring neighborhoods, for instance this one on Randolph Road.  There is a Monster Palace on New Hamphire Avenue in Hillandale and a Giant House going up in Woodmoor just past the Woodmoor Shopping Center going North on Colesville that you just can’t miss when driving out that way.  Sligo from Silver Spring Singular has posted a few blogs about McMansions in Silver Spring.  I liked this post about Mc Mansions by a local blogger.  Dan Reed (Our future architect/Urban Planner) from Just Up the Pike writes about them all the time and Silver Spring Daily Photo has a lot of photos of McMansions in and around Silver Spring.

So, How do you feel about McMansions in Silver Spring?  What’s your opinion?  Want more? Want less? Want Larger? Smaller? or just don’t care?

Silver Spring MD Neighborhood 4th of July Celebrations & Decorations

DSC00782 My neighbor Joseph Permetti decorates his home’s exterior for all seasons and the 4th of July is no exception. For the last 5–6 years, I always know what holiday is coming because Joseph decorates the exterior of this East Silver Spring home on Queen Annes Drive.  Each year the decorations are different and a little more elaborate.  On Halloween this past year, there were crowds of people looking and taking pictures.  He says that this coming halloween he has even Bigger plans than last year, so stay tuned for the GIANT DSC00781PUMPKIN house in a few months!

If you are staying in town for the 4th of July, A Good Old Fashioned Celebration that is worth taking in is Takoma Park’s 118th Annual 4th of July Parade and Fireworks.  There will also be an event in Wheaton called Wheaton Sparkles with a Fireworks Display at Einstien High School.

East Silver Spring’s Bungalow Streets

DSC00753 The bungalow, in Silver Spring, MD, is one of the most popular home styles that vintage home buyers will ask me to look for.  When I think of, or hear the word Bungalow, the first streets that come to mind are Silver Spring Avenue, Thayer Avenue, Easley Street, Sligo Avenue, Gist, Richmond and all their cross streets.  The subdivisions are Silver Spring, Silver Spring Park and Blair.  DSC00756

Developed from the early 1900’s to early 1930’s, this is a Vintage Bungalow Lover’s Heaven!  Every imaginable Bungalow type and style is represented and concentrated in this part of Silver Spring.  The wide streets with narrow and very deep wooded lots are characteristic of the way parcels were subdivided in this era.  Depending on the size and condition, vintage bungalows in this area of Silver Spring have sold for as little as $332,000 to as much as $645,000 in the past year.
DSC00746One  the first homes I ever sold as a newbie real estate agent was a 1928 “Sears” Dutch Colonial Style Bungalow on Richmond Avenue in Silver Spring.  The house was an estate sale, vacant, delapidated and in bad shape due to years of deferred maintenance.  This was the first “Fixer-Upper”, I had ever showed or seen in my new career and thought it was a rather scary project to take on. The people that made an offer on the house were excited because the original set of Sears Plans for the house were available and conveyed with the DSC00752property.  We all got even more excited when during the Home Inspection, the Inspector opened the rusty old fuse box and found over $3,000 dollars in cash stuffed inside!  The bills were from the 1950’s and 60’s.  That was when I thought, WOW, Old houses ARE Kinda Surprising, mysterious, charming, cozy and CAN be Really COOL!

Catching UP!!

As a Realtor, this is my extremely busy busy busytime of the year, so I’ve been kind of out of the Blog Loop Recently and I really miss it, So …

1.) I just sold an awesome house in Downtown Silver Spring.  The sellers worked hard for two months getting this one ready for the current “tough”, “kinda slow”, real estate market.  Their hard work paid off big time when this house SOLD in 2 DAYS! Just goes to show you how POPULAR and HOT the close-in Silver Spring area still is!! Take a Look at this House.

2.) I noticed there is great New Silver Spring Blog –  A very cool, democratic social networking site called the Silver Spring Town Center.  Check it out! I’ve also noticed some really fine blog makeovers at the Silver Spring Penguin, Just Up the Pike and the Silver Spring Scene. They all look better every time I have the time to check them out, I see something different and ..WOW, where have I been?  I think Silver Spring Singular and The Silver Bee are the only two Blogs in Silver Spring that have not had recent makeovers. I feel kinda behind and left out! How about you Sligo?

3.) After my recent post showing the Oldest House in Silver Spring an EVEN OLDER ONE Kinsmanhas come on the market for sale. It’s the original Kinsman Farmhouse out Colesville Road between 4 corners and Burnt Mills.  It dates back to 1783!, and I thought 1833 was OLD!! It’s on almost an acre hidden from the Road in the midst of  newer houses and townhouses. Check out the MLS listing on it, you won’t believe the restoration that’s been done on this 7 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, 2 Fireplace Historic House or the fact that it is OVER 200 years old and is in the 4 Corners/Northwood Park area of Silver Spring.

Silver Spring, Md Famous People’s Houses - Nora Roberts’ House

Romance Novelist Nora Roberts aka J.D. Robb grew up in this adorable bungalow off of Sligo Avenue near the heart of Downtown Silver Spring.  This area used to be known as “Takoma Park” and is now known as North Takoma Park with a Silver Spring Address.Â
Nora Roberts’ real name is Eleanor M Robertson and her 85+ year old mother still owns this house.  She grew up the youngest and “an only girl”, with a slew of brothers, who still live in the area.
                   NoraRHouse Â

Nora went to Parochial School, probably Saint Michaels Elementary, and then for High School she attended The Academy of the Holy Names (a girls High School on Pershing Drive which is now the Chelsea School) When she transferred to public school, the Old Blair High School, she met her first husband.Â

The family still owns and runs a very successful business, R&R Lighting on Silver Spring Avenue that her parents started in 1963, out of their home.

Nora Roberts still lives in Maryland, since leaving Silver Spring in the late 60’s she has lived in the quaint “off the beaten path” town of Keedysville, Md.- a far cry from the current Downtown Silver Spring Area!

Silver Spring, Md East Silver Spring Proposed Residential Development

DSC00358Proposed Condo/Apartment Building at 814 Thayer Avenue – Currently an Office Building (Accross from Silver Spring Towers Apartments) will be a 5 story 52 Unit Residential Building – Units will be 1 or 2 Bedroom – Some will have a mezzanine. Expected Prices are to be less than $450,000.  The developers are not sure how many or if any units will be for rent.  The designers are considering the location as a “transistional site” between the commercial buildings of Fenton Street Village and the adjoining residential area.  The building facade along Thayer Ave. will be pointed, with extensive glass panelling, the building will be set back from the street, and have a small plaza featuring chess tables, plus trees & ornamental plants.  The current building on the site was once home to the National Association of the Deaf & the National Association of the Deaf and Blind, to commemorate this the new building will have Braille on the exterior surface, plus other tributes to these associations. There will be only be 37 parking spaces for this Building. This Building design is Conceptual and not Final, at this time. The East Silver Spring Citizens Association heard about this proposed development at their January Meeting.

For the February meeting the East Silver Spring Citizens Association will hear from the DSC00360Attorney for the developers of the site on the southeast corner of Silver Spring Avenue and Fenton Street. (currently a Parking Lot – Just a block away from the 814 Thayer Ave Site)  There is a  94 Unit Residential Project proposed.  This project will be either Condominiums or Apartments.  Residents in East Silver Spring have some valid concerns about traffic and parking, in and around an already busy, crowded, way too narrow Fenton Street.

Fond Farewell to the Silver Spring, Md Horses

Horse Silver SpringRemember the Mounted Park Police Horses that patroled Downtown Silver Spring? Every Thursday they patrolled my East Silver Spring Neighborhood. I used to love seeing them walk slowly down the street. I thought they added a charming and nostalgic touch to Silver Spring. Especially when riding down Georgia Avenue near the Discovery Building, What a Contrast! Cool! The horse trailer would be parked at the Sligo Avenue Police Station and after the day’s patrol the officers would load the horses up here and go home. I missed seeing the horses in 2006, thought maybe I had just been too busy to notice them, but I understand that the County stopped funding for the patrol last year. I’ve been told they still patrol the Parks  but I, for one, really miss seeing them on the streets of Silver Spring! I think they detered crime, gave the officers more visibility and were able to go a lot of places that a police car can’t! Maybe they should bring them back now!

It’s Halloween! 3 More Scary Silver Spring Houses

noose_150.jpgStygmatized?:In 1990, this house, located near the corner of Greenbrier & Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring was owned by a Single Guy who kept it in immaculate condition. I met him one day when he was cutting his grass. I told him how charming his tudor style house was and that I had always admired it. 2 years later I noticed this same house had come up for sale. The gossip about the house was that the owner had hung himself from the overhang in the foyer, in onl his boxer shorts, with a bag over his head. He left a note for the mailman saying…..
