Woodmoor Real Estate Market Report

Woodmoor and Indian Spring Village are the largest of the Legal Subdivisions in the Neighborhood known as Woodmoor.  Woodmoor’s first homes were built in 1938.  At that time Indian Spring Country Club (now the Silver Spring YMCA) was a draw for the Community, Also St Bernadette’s Church and opening of the school drew families to the Community.

The cool, art deco style, circa 1940’s Woodmoor Shopping Center at the edge of this beautiful neighborhood was recently restored.  Home of the Silver Spring Stage theatre, The medium sized, 3 story Shopping Center still has quaint, locally owned well known and long lasting mom and pop shops like the Woodmoor Pastry Shop, Santucci’s Italian Deli, The Watch Pocket and the wonderful Hoover Fisher’s Florist to name just a few.  More well know chains such as a CVS, a Starbucks and Subway are sprinkled in this mix of stores. A new Tuesday Morning Outlet opened in Woodmoor Shopping Center in the Fall of 2007.

A pretty Neighborhood of 700+ Single Family Homes located in the Four Corners Area of Silver Spring, Md in 20901.  Woodmoor brings to mind, older charming Cape Cods, Colonials mixed with a few post-war Ramblers and Split Levels on friendly, shady, tree lined streets.

The McMansions in East Silver Spring

Old easley
This post was inspired by a another local blogger www.ThayerAvenue.com  who posted about a ginormous McMansion going up in East Silver Spring on Thayer Avenue.

Most of East Silver Spring still has “normal sized” older houses.  The few McMansions or new infill construction Easley Middlethat we do have REALLY stand out.

One example on Easley street is the “McMansion with no windows”  It started out as a small bungalow home built in 1928 between 2 other similar houses.  The home had a larger and deeper than average lot size of 12,180 sq ft.

It was torn down sometime ago and remained a big watery mud hole with trash and debris in it for a few years.  I once walked by the lot and noticed they were still getting junk and other mail delivered to 701 Easley, it was strewn all over the front of the mud hole. While it was still just a hole, it caused a lot of concern and complaints from the adjoining neighbors and the neighborhood in general.
I though they’d never build anything there.  Then all of a sudden a huge foundation went up this past year.  The picture does not do it justice - it is ENORMOUS.  Can’t wait to see what it will look like when it’s finished.  It will certainly stand out amongst the small old bungalows on that street.
Deerfield - million
A tasteful newly constructed infill home was completed recently just down the way at 608 Deerfield in East Silver Spring - McNeills Subdivision. The lot was a little over 7,000 square feet and an old garage at the back of the vacant lot was the only thing torn down to build the house.

This house sold for $1,191,064.00 ( one million, one hundred ninety one thousand and sixty four dollars ) and settled less than 3 months ago.  I think this NEW house just “nails it” for a perfect fit with the neighborhood character of East Silver Spring.
Check out the Listing and Interior Photos Link for 608 Deerfield Avenue, Silver Spring, Md 20910.

Some Gigantic Monster Houses have gone up or are going up in some older Silver Spring neighborhoods, for instance this one on Randolph Road.  There is a Monster Palace on New Hamphire Avenue in Hillandale and a Giant House going up in Woodmoor just past the Woodmoor Shopping Center going North on Colesville that you just can’t miss when driving out that way.  Sligo from Silver Spring Singular has posted a few blogs about McMansions in Silver Spring.  I liked this post about Mc Mansions by a local blogger.  Dan Reed (Our future architect/Urban Planner) from Just Up the Pike writes about them all the time and Silver Spring Daily Photo has a lot of photos of McMansions in and around Silver Spring.

So, How do you feel about McMansions in Silver Spring?  What’s your opinion?  Want more? Want less? Want Larger? Smaller? or just don’t care?

Tuesday Morning Store Opens in Silver Spring Tomorrow!

Tuesday morning
I am pleased and excited that Tuesday Morning Home Goods Store is opening in Silver Spring!  I’ve shopped at Tuesday Morning before.  It is a great store for gifts, things for your home and for Staging Houses for Sale.  It is a lot like Linen’s and Things or Bed Bath and Beyond, but much less expensive!

Now Silver Springers, including me, will not have to schlep to Rockville or Bowie to shop at this amazing discount home goods store.Woodmoor

The store is ready and opens on Tuesday (of course), that’s tommorow, November 6th, 2007!

This store will open in the building that SAM KUGLER’s House of Linens Store used to occupy at the corner of University Boulevard and Colesville Road (RT 29).

By the way, SAM KUGLER is alive and well.  He moved further out Route 29 past White Oak to the Tech Road Business Center.

Silver Spring, Md Happy 50th Anniversary to Four Corners Animal Hospital

4 corners animal Hospital BuildingFour Corners Animal Hospital was established in 1957, and moved to its present location in 1963. Through Dr. Rosswell Bowersett, Sr., and Dr. Bowersett, Jr., they have seen two generations of Silver Spring clients. In 1988, Dr. Bowersett, Jr., began working at Four Corners with his dad. Dr. Rosswell Bowersett, Sr., worked daily with the practice from 1957 until his death in July 2000. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Presently, Dr. Bowersett, Jr. owns and runs Four Corners Animal Hospital as a sole proprietor. DSC00314
Ros Bowersett, Jr., DVM, MPH (University of Georgia 1988 & Johns Hopkins University 2006) is the primary veterinarian and owner of Four Corners Animal Hospital. Ros is a Silver Spring native and graduated from Springbrook High School (yeah! GO BLUE DEVILS) where he was on the wrestling team. Like his father, he graduated from the University of Georgia. Dr.Bowersett operated an ambulatory equine practice from 2001-2005, serving Montgomery and Howard Counties. In the Spring of 2006 he completed his training in public health. In addition to enjoying clinical veterinary medicine, Dr. Bowersett is also interested in zoonotic disease Lobby Receptionist Deskresearch.
Anyone who drives through 4 Corners on University Blvd. will recognize the unique and striking Mid Century Modern Building with it’s blue tile and DVM symbol on the front. They are located at 105 University Boulevard West. I have been taking my pets to the Dr.’s Bowerset, Jr and Senior for over 17 years. I miss The Senior Dr. Bowersett very much, but his son is very much like him in many ways.  I can vouch for his love and care of all the animals that come to the Hospital, and ANY animal abandoned or in trouble anywhere!  He’s a GREAT vet, supported by a great staff. So, to Ros and Staff at the Four Corners Animal Hospital Congratulations on your 50th year as (In my opinion) Silver Spring, Maryland’s Best Veternarians!

carson-house-for-blog.jpgRachael Carson, this pioneer activist stirred up controversy with her book “Silent Spring” She wrote the book in her house in the Quaint Acres Neighborhood of Silver Spring, Md. This fairly modest rambler with english basement was built in 1957 and sits on a heavily wood lot of a little over an acre.
