Silver Spring Residents Fighting to Save the Watson House

The Committee to Save the Watson House, a large group of residents in Silver Spring’s Woodside Forest, has appealed to Montgomery County to save the historic Watson House, one of the best and few remaining examples of the Dutch Colonial architecture in the area. Early in 2007, the Committee hired EHT Traceries, Inc., architectural historians based in D.C., to research the house and its architectural significance. Originating in homes put up by German settlers in Pennsylvania as far back as the 1600s, the Dutch Colonial style saw a revival in the early 20th century. Built ca. 1918, the house at 9206 Watson Road sits atop a hill on just slightly under 1.5 acres. In its wooded setting bordered by an intricately woven stone wall, it bespeaks a time before the late 20th century boom in suburban development. The house almost abuts two others that have already received historic designation by the county: the Civil War-era Condict House and the late 1880s, Second Empire Wilbur House. From this historic enclave whose three distinctive styles tell a story of American architectural history spanning three-quarters of a century, it is a stone’s throw to Sligo Creek to the north and only a short walking distance to downtown Silver Spring to the south. The county’s Historic Preservation Commission took up the case of the Watson House along with other proposed historic resources at its scheduled Dec. 19 meeting. Although HPC staff did not recommend the nomination for designation, the commission, allowing for additional materials to be submitted, put off a vote until its January 9 meeting. At that time, commissioners will decide whether to recommend to the County Council that the house be placed on the county’s Master Plan for Historic Preservation. If it is not designated, Committee members fear the house will be demolished. “We do not want to see this beautiful old house razed and the surrounding landscaping destroyed to make way for a new development,” said Kathleen Staudt, a Committee member. “At the same time, we’re not opposed to reasonable new development on the property as long as the existing home is preserved.” Apart from the house’s architectural value, there is increasing evidence that the elevated area on which the triad of houses sits was used as a Confederate encampment, as is suggested in memoirs of soldiers who marched with Confederate General Jubal A. Early when he advanced toward Washington in July 1864. In addition, the Watson House property contains a wide spectrum of mature plant specimens and groves, including Azalea, American Holly, Hemlock, Kentucky Coffee Tree, White Pine, Poplar, Dogwood, Southern Magnolia and Crape Myrtle.

Many Thanks to a Commitee Member of Save the Watson House for Information and Photos!

When Fido, Fluffy or Tweety Go Missing in Silver Spring

Robin Siegel is resident of the Woodside Park Neighborhood of Silver Spring and a tireless lost and found volunteer for the Montgomery County Humane Society.  You may have seen her vehicle in and around Silver Spring. She has the vehicle “wrapped with what she does”, so you can’t miss it!

Dog cat togetherRobin is a Volunteer who has a mission, a passion for and a great deal of success finding owners of lost pets by using neighborhood Yahoo groups.  She has joined over 100 groups in the past two years so that she can monitor for lost pets, post information, and notify of animals picked up in the area.

If you get a request from her to join your Yahoo group, please permit her to do so, so that she can add your Silver Spring neighborhood to the range that she is able to cover. I hope you have no objections to her posting notices to groups when pets are found in your area.  She can also answer questions regarding the shelter, and advise on lost and found pets in general.

If you find a any lost pet in your Silver Spring Neighborhood (including cats, dogs, birds, ferrets, hamsters, lizards, rabbits .  . . just about anything!) and you don’t know who it belongs to feel free to contact her for suggestions on finding the owners.

The Oldest House in Silver Spring?

This old farmhouse sits at the highest point on a hill overlooking Colesville Road from the top Front of house from end of Harvey Roadof Greyrock Road and Harvey Roads in The Woodside Park Neighborhood of Silver Spring. Built in 1833, it is by far the oldest house I have ever encountered in Silver Spring.

Surrounded now by homes built in the 1940’s on Harvey Road and Greyrock Road, it looks to me like before these homes were built around it, it must have looked out on Colesville Road and down at Mrs K’sTollhouse with lots of acreage around and Back of House from Greyrock Roadprobably had a Colesville Road address. The address now is 9315 Greyrock Road, Silver Spring, Md 20910, the street address is at the back of the 3/4 acre property. The front of the property (front of the house with the porch) is at the end of Harvey Road.Â

I was surprised to find out that this was the home of David and Elizabeth Scull. They purchased it from the Watson family in 1949 and Elizabeth Scull lived in the house until her death in 1981. Elisabeth L. Scull was a descendant of the Blair and Lee Families of Silver Spring and had a tremendous career on the Montgomery County Council. I found it cool that she was a Champion of Affordable Housing and Housing for the poor in Montgomery County.Â

Proposed Subdivision in Silver Spring-Woodside 1.43 Acre Lot - 6 Homes

gate-to-watson.jpgAn Old Elegant Dutch Colonial Built in 1912 sits majestically on an elevated circular site, surrounded by old fragrant pine trees and a stone retaining wall. The grounds are abundant with mature trees including an old giant sized magnolia. The house is vacant and overgrown and suffers badly from deferred maintainence, but still retains the charm of a bygone era. It appears that at one time the house had a circular driveway coming in from edgevale road and going out to Watson Road. The Plans are to raze the old house and build 6 new houses. The Address is 9206 Watson Road, Silver Spring, Md 20910 Off of Dale Drive near Colesville Road.

It’s Halloween! 3 More Scary Silver Spring Houses

noose_150.jpgStygmatized?:In 1990, this house, located near the corner of Greenbrier & Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring was owned by a Single Guy who kept it in immaculate condition. I met him one day when he was cutting his grass. I told him how charming his tudor style house was and that I had always admired it. 2 years later I noticed this same house had come up for sale. The gossip about the house was that the owner had hung himself from the overhang in the foyer, in onl his boxer shorts, with a bag over his head. He left a note for the mailman saying…..
