Silver Spring, Md - My Solution for Brawl Control Outside the Magestic

Crowd controlSeveral Area Bloggers have posted about the Disruptions, Brawls and Gang Problems in Downtown Silver Spring.  I liked Silver Spring Singular’s solution.
I have an even CHEAPER, and I think, better one.  It’s organic, natural and ECO-Friendly (Granola Park types will like this), doesn’t use gas, is not loud and not on the County Payrolls. This great form of crowd control gives police officers a way better view from above the crowds unlike being in a car or a tank. Some people are very afraid of this device too! It is used in a lot of cities (like New Orleans, LA), for boisterous “out of hand” crowds during Mardi Gras.  We used to have this service in Downtown Silver Spring, but the County took it out of the budget for 2004.  A big mistake, I think..! Bring these guys back now.

Silver Spring, Md Sligo Creek Park - Changes Proposed for Sligo Golf Course and Other Park Facilities

The Montgomery County Revenue Authority has proposed changes to the Sligo Creek Golf Golf SignCourse.  They want to add a lighted tiered driving range and a minature golf course ( but not a “tacky” or  “carnival” type course) The neighboring community is NOT Happy about the changes and has rejected the planned changes. Read the Washington Post Article from last week. Not everyone is opposed to the minature golf course at the Sligo Creek Location, a noted Silver Spring Blogger and native of Silver Spring “Sligo” has a different opinion about this.

If you want to have some input in what happens in and to our parks – Show up at this forum and comment or give written testimony.  I know I will be there lobbying for my pet project, the much needed off-leash DOG PARK in Silver Spring!

Fond Farewell to the Silver Spring, Md Horses

Horse Silver SpringRemember the Mounted Park Police Horses that patroled Downtown Silver Spring? Every Thursday they patrolled my East Silver Spring Neighborhood. I used to love seeing them walk slowly down the street. I thought they added a charming and nostalgic touch to Silver Spring. Especially when riding down Georgia Avenue near the Discovery Building, What a Contrast! Cool! The horse trailer would be parked at the Sligo Avenue Police Station and after the day’s patrol the officers would load the horses up here and go home. I missed seeing the horses in 2006, thought maybe I had just been too busy to notice them, but I understand that the County stopped funding for the patrol last year. I’ve been told they still patrol the Parks  but I, for one, really miss seeing them on the streets of Silver Spring! I think they detered crime, gave the officers more visibility and were able to go a lot of places that a police car can’t! Maybe they should bring them back now!

Silver Spring Needs A Dog Park or 2- Inside the Beltway

Charlie CookWith all the new developement in Silver Spring, more development expected, and the fact that we are expecting 2,000 to 3,000 more residents in the next 2 years there is a concern that our green spaces and parks will dwindle. As a dog owner I went looking for a dog park near my home in downtown Silver Spring. There are only 2 in Montgomery County:Wheaton & Germantown. I went to the closest in Wheaton. I was astounded to find 35-40 dogs and their owners in a 1/2 acre fenced lot with gravel and a few trees and picnic tables. People had come from all over Montgomery County - Bethesda, North Potomac, Rockville, East Silver Spring, South Silver Spring and Woodside. The dogs were having a blast. My own pup hardly ever sees other dogs and had a great time socializing. Dog parks are becoming very popular and are obviously needed and wanted in our county - Dogs that are socialized well are less likely to be a nuisance or threat to public safety - WE NEED MORE Dog Parks!
